In 2008, I flew alone to work in the Dominican Republic, on the other side of the world. At that time, I was assigned by a domestic company to be a Chinese teacher. By definition, I was not a digital nomad. However, the challenge of “building a social circle from scratch” was the same as that faced by every digital nomad worker today.
Moreover, FB and various social networking brazil mobile database apps were not popular at that time. It was not as easy to meet Taiwanese people who were already in the Dominican Republic through the Internet before going abroad, or to find local friends with common interests through Facebook groups like it is now.
I took a 30-hour flight from Taiwan to Los Angeles, from Los Angeles to Panama, and from Panama to the Dominican Republic. When I walked out of the airport, I was already dizzy and just wanted to take a shower and sleep all day. The next day when I went out to look for food, I was like, "Wow! Am I really going to live for two years in this place where no one in the country knows me?"
The first day was very new and fun. It was fun to go shopping in the supermarket, walk into the grocery store full of human touch, and learn how to take the local public transportation system.
