An exit intent popup can give you a huge lead boost, more revenue, and an insane amount of information about your target audience. Don’t believe me? You should probably read this article to automotive mailing list learn how exit popups work and why your business might need them.

When marketers hear the word “pop-up,” they tense up. Understandably so. We’ve all seen bad examples of exit pop-ups.

We’ve all heard of fad diets, right? That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat healthy. It just means you shouldn’t overdo it. When used correctly, they can be powerful marketing tools that will help you capture leads and increase sales.

What is a pop-up window?
A pop-up is a window that appears on top of your existing website. These days, it's usually not a separate window — if you use the right software — but an overlay that provides some sort of ad.

Pop-ups can be any size. You've probably seen the small pop-up windows — sometimes called modals or sliders — that appear on a website shortly after you visit.

They usually want you to do something, like take a quiz or activate a visible discount. Many ask you to sign up for the site's email newsletter, often in exchange for a lead magnet or free stuff.

What is an exit intent notification pop-up?
An exit intent popup is a special form of popup that appears on a website when a visitor attempts to leave. Moving the mouse to the top of the browser window activates the exit intent technology and the exit popup suddenly appears.

This is also called a page capture popup because it takes over the user's entire screen. Here's an example of an exit intent popup from Hello Bar:

What is an exit intent notification pop-up?

Exit intent popups work by using exit intent technology to determine when a visitor is about to leave your site. These triggers can include mouse movements toward the top of the page or a quick scroll up, indicating that the user wants to leave.

This critical moment is your last chance to engage visitors before they leave. These pop-ups can help you reduce bounce rates and increase conversions.

For example, if you run an online store, you can use an exit popup to offer a 10% discount code. This can turn abandoned visitors into repeat customers.

How are exit intent popups different from regular popups?
Think about how you use a website. You are looking for information, interested in buying a product, or just browsing. In either case, you click on a web page because you want something from it .

Traditional pop-ups usually appear as soon as you land on a web page or shortly after. You're not quite sure yet.

This doesn't mean that other pop-ups can't work - they can - but they're often ineffective because they're annoying to the viewer. The reader thinks, "All I wanted to do was check out this site." It's an interruption.

Exit intent popups, on the other hand, appear when the visitor is ready to leave. This is a key differentiator. The fact that they take up the entire page provides another distinction. They are more likely to grab the viewer’s attention if they are well designed and contain good copy (more on that later).
